He opened an art studio in Manhattan in 1910 with his sister Claire, marking the start of his professional endeavors. After serving in World War I, he gained recognition for his illustrations in pulp magazines, transitioning to cover art for romance publications and slick magazines depicting glamorous Hollywood stars. His talents extended beyond traditional art, as he became involved in judging beauty contests and teaching art classes in Galveston, Texas, during the winter months.
