INSIDE GREETING: Babies are the sweetest flowers in the world.

This endearing depiction of a baby surrounded by gentle animal companions graces the cover of Maud & Miska Petersham's 1948 book, My Very First Book, one of several titles they both authored and illustrated. Their work was notably influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement in America, a style that found a natural home as they resided next to the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in Woodstock, New York, which still operates today! The artistic synergy with the colony is apparent in their art. See all our New Baby greeting cards!

Maud Fuller Petersham (1890–1971) and her husband, Miska Petersham (1888–1960), were a prolific and influential artistic duo in the realm of American children's literature. Maud, born in Rockport, Massachusetts, and Miska, hailing from Hungary, both brought diverse cultural backgrounds to their collaborative work. They met in New York City and married in 1917, forming a lifelong partnership both romantically and professionally. Together, they embarked on an illustrious artistic career, primarily known for their vibrant and imaginative illustrations in numerous children's books. Their distinct style combined elements of folk art and modernism, making their work instantly recognizable. In 1946, the Petershams received the prestigious Caldecott Medal for their illustrated book The Rooster Crows. This celebrated work, along with many others in their impressive portfolio, continues to resonate with readers of all ages, evoking the distinct experience of American childhood.
