Green Tiger’s Illustrated Shakespeare
After taking her children to visit Shakespeareís house, E. Nesbit ñ one of the greatest of childrenís novelists ñ was faced with a conundrum:
ìI canít understand a word of it,î said Iris.
ìAnd you said it was so beautiful,î Rosamund added, reproachfully. ìWhat does it all mean?î
ìYes,î Iris went on, ìyou said it was a fairy tale, and weíve read three pages, and thereís nothing
about fairies, not even a dwarf, or a fairy god mother.î
ìAnd what does ëmisgraffedí mean?î
ìand ëvantage,í and ëausterity,í and ëbelike,í and ëedict,í andóì
ìstop, stop,î I cried; I will tell you the story.î
And she did, eventually publishing her retellings of 20 of Shakespeareís plays.
The plays we include are:
As You Like It, Hamlet, Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Nigh, The Tempest, Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Midsummer Nightís Dream and The Merchant of Venice.
