Cats are an important part of our lives, so it makes sense that they would turn up frequently on Christmas cards. This selection of 8 vintage images of felines offering holiday cheer ranges from the Victorian to the mid-century.

The friendship between Santa Claus and his reindeer is one of the most endearing of Christmas stories. The flying reindeer are as important as Santa himself in the miraculous completion of his yearly duties. We have selected eight vintage image of Santa with Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen Donner, Blitzen Cupid and Comet.

The period between 1880 and World War I was the great era of the picture postcard. Inexpensive postal rates and high-quality, high-speed printing methods encouraged the growth of this craze, which swept the world and brought countless thousands of postcards into existence.

Christmas was naturally a popular postcard subject, and where we reproduce thirty very different and interesting antique postcards from our large collection in which jolly Santas and adorable children abound.

This book was inspired by the great era of the American magazine-roughly 1910 to 1960-a time when most homes subscribed to at least several magazines.

The December/Christmas issue was often the bestseller of the year; holiday covers demanded a publisher’s best efforts and the results are evident. December was not a month for experimentation or weak execution, or a less than stellar artist. The covers collected here are both visually excellent and a précis of American Christmas custom.

"The Truth About Easter Rabbits", which we published in 2005, was so attractive and so popular that we follow it up with this survey of snow men, snow women, snow children and snow animals. Like the Easter Rabbit book it uses a great variety of illustrative sources to provide a comprehensive view of how snow people are created, how they vary in personality and appearance, their recreational preferences, their family lives, and what happens to them after they melt. Most of us love snow people already, but after looking at this book one will enjoy them in a more profound way.

The images in "We Wish You A Crazy Christmas" were chosen from our vast collection of Victorian and Edwardian Christmas cards and postcards. Those eras produced millions of cards, for this a strong time for both mailed correspondence and Yuletide greetings. Most had traditional or religious imagery, but a substantial minority were – to our minds – malapropos, such as cow in a field, a tree blossoming in spring, a sandy beach. A smaller number goes beyond irrelevancy to weirdness, and these we have decided to share with our adventurous customers. They offer the opportunity to ponder, laugh, or to simply wonder "Why?"

In the Victorian era, Christmas as a commercial holiday exploded and many of the traditions we still celebrate, were originated in the Victorian age. We find their old fashioned look somehow perfect for Christmas time.

Animals are an important, but often overlooked, part of Christmas. From the nativity onwards they have ben part of the family celebration. From our extensive collection of children’s picture books the Laughing Elephant has selected thirty illustrations featuring a wide variety of animals at Christmas. The detachable postcards are suitable for short Christmas correspondence, party invites, thank you notes, or as a small art book to be kept intact and enjoyed every Chirstmas season.

First published in 1916, this beautifully illustrated and attractively shaped book tells the
story of a boy named Teddy who flies to the North Pole to see Santa. He gets to feed
the reindeer, help Santa in his workshop and also to help him pack his sleigh. After all
of Teddy’s adventures he is delivered safely home just in time for Christmas morning.
The illustrations are by Margaret Evans Price, whose charming work graces some of our
most popular publications. She was married to one of the founders of the Fisher Price
toy company, and her illustrations served as the basis for some of their early products.

This wonderful, anonymous work was first published in the 1940′s. In 26 happy pictures a group of young cats celebrate Christmas, alphabetically. For a "C" a cat eats Candy, in "H" a holly wreath is carried and for "K" the kiss beneath the mistletoe is most charming. The Naive style and vintage appeal, paired with the small size and price point, adds up to a delicious holiday treat, suitable for all manner of gift giving needs.

We take candles for granted as a part of Christmas; few of us know of the folklore and symbolism that explains this association. This booklet gives a brief history of the candle and its use in Christmas celebration from early times. Included are many pictures of candles–in processions, on trees, in windows, and in crËches and churches.

The Christmas card, which was invented in the middle of the 19th century, took a long time to decide what it was. We have come to expect Christmas cards to picture something pertinent to the holiday season, or at least winter. This was not always the case, as this gathering of oddities suggests. Examples of inexplicable Christmas greetings included here are: moths dressed as witches, a burning cigar, an old shoe, birds enjoying the sight of a spider, and terriers chasing a rat.

"Christmas cards frequently picture dogs; this is true of every era from the Victoria through the entire 20th century. We cannot fully explain this predilection, but we do know that dogs are an important part of life for many of us, and thus we enjoy their presence wherever it crops up.

Little Elephant carefully chooses gifts for his family, watches with great excitement and mounting anticipation as the mailman delivers packages to their house, makes a Christmas cake with his mother, helps pick out and decorate the tree and of course, hangs his stocking on the fireplace before bed on Christmas Eve. Christmas morning at last arrives and with a trumpet blast of joy, familiar to all parents on Christmas morning, trunk or not, to wake his parents up very early for the big day. Presents are opened, toys are played with and enjoyed, taffy is pulled in the kitchen and Christmas dinner is even more wonderful than could have been hoped for. This is a story children will want to read year after year in preparation for the good things of the holiday season.

Santa, as you might imagine, is an easygoing guy, jolly, and eager to like and to be liked. He takes no pleasure in making up the list of naughty boys and girls. But there is one thing Santa Claus does not care for and that is when people put out store bought cookies for him on Christmas Eve. This is not to say that Santa does not enjoy the occasional Oreo, Thin Mint or Nutter Butter, but rather that when he has taken the time to come right to ones house to deliver one’s gifts in person he would like to know that we have made an effort on his behalf as well.

"Cookies For Santa"does not purport to contain Santa’s very favorite cookie recipes, but we will say that have we know a lot about Santa, having read numerous biographies, and having seen most of the biopics about him. Thus we feel that we understand his tastes pretty well and we have selected recipes based on our understanding of him and what we think he would like.

"The Truth About Santa Claus" is our fourth title in our series on mythic figures, using old pictures to perhaps discover something new of their natures.

We have had great success with this book’s predecessors – "The Truth About Easter Rabbits," "Snow-People," and "Jack-o-Lanterns." We now turn to the most elusive and ancient of them all, Santa Claus. We have assembled from our library hundreds of pictures of Santa, and then deduced from this material much about him.

Such subjects as Santa’s dress, character, home life, marriage, and work habits are explored. We look at his relations to his helpers, his reindeer, the children he sometimes meets on his miraculous journeys and even his activities outside of the Christmas season.

Every assertion is supported by pictorial evidence, all in splendid color.

We suggest this little book as a slight, but perfect, Christmas book. It tells of the mutual love and self-sacrifice of a young married couple. It is about the best kind of gift giving, and of course, takes its title from the first Christmas gift givers, the three Magi, or wise men.
