René Cloke (1905-1995) was a British illustrator of children's books and greeting cards. The information on René Cloke is oddly various. One source claims she was a woman born in Plymouth, England on October 4th, 1904. The British Library says René Cloke was a man, thought they agree about the birth in Plymouth, but offer no birth date. Another source has her born on the 5th, 1904.

In any case, René Cloke was responsible for a good many illustrations in magazines and books. Her (or his) best known book was “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” (1944).

In fact, he (or she) illustrated more than 30 other books, some of which were both written and illustrated by Cloke. Fairies were a popular subject for children’s books in the period when Cloke was active, and he or she was very good at depicting them.
