Angel over Water - Sympathy Greeting Card
INSIDE GREETING: With Heartfelt Sympathy
This majestic angel by Rockwell Kent is perfect for an uplifting sympathy card. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky's 1910 ballet, L'Oiseau de Feu (The Firebird), it was created to promote Steinway pianos as "The Instrument of the Immortals." Interestingly, it appeared within the pages of the December 1927 edition of House Beautiful, of which we have the cover in our catalog! See this image as an art print!
Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), known for his diverse talents and adventurous spirit, pursued various careers throughout his lifetime, including architect, carpenter, explorer, writer, dairy farmer, and political activist. Born in Tarrytown, New York, his artistic aspirations were nurtured by his aunt Jo Holgate, a skilled ceramicist. Encouraged by his mentors and fellow New York School of Art students, he transitioned from studying architecture at Columbia University to pursuing painting full-time. His success as a painter and illustrator grew, with notable exhibitions and commissions, including iconic illustrations for Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1930). As an active supporter of progressive political causes, he faced scrutiny from the State Department during World War II. Still, he found acclaim in the Soviet Union, where his works were exhibited frequently. Despite fluctuations in his artistic reputation, Kent's legacy endures and is celebrated for his contributions to art and activism.
