Ludwig Hohlwein (1874–1949) was a German poster artist who pioneered the Sachplakat (German for "poster style") style. Trained as an architect, he transitioned to poster design when he moved to Berlin in 1911. His distinctive style, characterized by high tonal contrasts and interlocking shapes, quickly gained recognition in German Gebrauchsgrafik schools. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, his prolific output encompassed over 3000 advertisements, marked by sharply defined forms, vibrant colors, humor, and textured patterns. Despite his creative achievements, Hohlwein's involvement with the Nazi party during World War II tarnished his legacy. Collaborating closely with Joseph Goebbels and The Ministry of Propaganda and Enlightenment, he produced posters for the regime, embodying National Socialist realism.
