Ernest Joseph Laurent (1859–1929) was a French painter and printmaker known for his contributions to neo-impressionism. His art was shaped by his mentor, Ernest Hébert, and his close friend Georges Seurat. After winning second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1889, he embarked on an artistic pilgrimage and experienced a profound spiritual awakening in Assisi. This encounter profoundly influenced his oeuvre, leading to a shift towards religious themes upon his return to Paris. While his work evolved with themes of spiritual devotion and symbolism, it created a divergence from Seurat's materialistic approach, ultimately leading to their parting. Today, Laurent rests in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy that includes notable pieces like his portrait of Seurat, now displayed in the Louvre.
