Hildegard Woodward (1898-1977) was a celebrated American author and illustrator, notable for her significant contributions to children's literature. Her work earned her two Caldecott Honor awards for the books Roger and the Fox (1948) and The Wild Birthday Cake (1950). Her artistic talents encompassed watercolor and oil paintings, and she also excelled as a children's portrait artist. Notably, Woodward's determination and artistic passion persisted even after she began losing her sight in the 1960s. She developed an innovative method of "painting by touch," allowing her to continue creating art.
