Description

This piece, Sea Holly, a.k.a. Chardon de Grèves (Thistle of the Beach), is a partner image to Heather, a.k.a. Bruyère de Falaise (Heather of the Cliffs) made by Alphonse Mucha in 1902. Inspired by his frequent holidays in coastal northwestern France, the depicted women wear the costumes of Normandy and Brittany respectively, while holding flowers native to those regions. They even face one another as the provinces do on a map! Mucha affectionately referred to these pieces as La Bretonne and La Normande. This artwork serves as one of many examples of his ability to combine the beauty of nature with rich cultural symbolism. See this image on a greeting card!

Mucha (1860-1939) was a visionary artist whose artistry and creativity shaped the Art Nouveau movement! Born in 1860 in Moravia, now the Czech Republic, Mucha's artistic journey took him from a struggling artist to an internationally renowned master of his craft. With his distinctive style characterized by intricate patterns, flowing lines, and ethereal female figures, Mucha's art played a significant role in shaping the visual aesthetics of the late-19th and early-20th centuries.
