Children Riding A Whale - Children Art Print
We don't know the circumstances in which this multicultural assortment of children hopped atop this big fish for a ride, but we're happy they're happy. Nina Brisley created them for a children's book illustration. See this image on a greeting card!
The Brisley sisters, hailing from Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, consisted of Joyce, Ethel, and Nina (1898-1978), the artist behind this piece. They all attended evening classes at Hastings School of Art. Ethel exhibited at the Royal Academy while Joyce and Nina contributed illustrations to Home Chat, a British weekly women's magazine. Following the family's relocation to Brixton, London, after their parents' divorce in June 1912, Joyce and Nina pursued further studies at Lambeth School of Art to support themselves through writing and illustrating. Their Christian Science background led to submissions to The Christian Science Monitor, with Joyce's Milly-Molly-Mandy stories gaining popularity and published by George G. Harrap in 1928. Nina, later known as Nina Kennard Brisley after her marriage in 1933, became the illustrator for Elinor Brent-Dyer's renowned Chalet School series. Their legacy includes a treasure trove of endearing drawings, often featuring young girls, possibly inspired by each other.
