Arthur John Elsley (1860–1952) was a renowned English painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, celebrated for his charming genre scenes depicting playful children and their pets. Born in London, he honed his skills with frequent visits to the London Zoo and formal training at the South Kensington School of Art. He gained widespread acclaim for his heartwarming portrayals of childhood, often capturing the bond between children and animals with great tenderness. His popularity soared, with his works featured in calendars, magazines, and books. Despite facing challenges like deteriorating eyesight and reduced productivity during World War I, his legacy as a preeminent painter of childhood joy endures, with his works displayed in galleries and collections worldwide. Many of his paintings feature his daughter Marjorie as a model, adding a sweet personal touch to his oeuvre.
