This sweet baby girl was delicately rendered in soft pastels by Frances Hook. In 1958, her American Beauties debuted in Northern Tissue advertisements as the original Northern Girls. Initially, four girls represented the four colors of toilet paper, later joined by three boys for the paper towels and sets of prints. By 1966, these prints had collectively sold 30 million copies! Frances Arnold Hook (1913-1983) was an American artist who was celebrated for her pastel illustrations of children, notably for commercial advertisements. Born in Ambler, Pennsylvania, Frances honed her artistic skills at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art. Her commercial success began with ads for General Electric and expanded to include brands like Steinway Pianos and Hallmark Cards. Notably, her Northern Tissue illustrations revolutionized toilet paper packaging! Transitioning from commercial art to inspirational themes, Hook collaborated with her husband, Richard Hook (1914-1975), on illustrating The Living Bible for Tyndale House.
