Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880), a second-generation painter of the Hudson River School, became renowned for his mastery of light and atmosphere. Born in Greenfield, New York, he showed an early affinity for art, likely influenced by his older brother's similar passion and guidance from local artists. Despite a brief stint at Brown University, his love for art led him to study under John Rubens Smith in New York City. By 1847, he exhibited his first painting at the National Academy of Design, marking the start of a prolific career. During his European travels from 1855 to 1857, he drew inspiration from Turner and other masters. Upon his return, his reputation soared, evidenced by masterpieces like Gorge in the Mountains (Kauterskill Clove), created in 1862. Despite personal tragedies during the Civil War, his art flourished, earning him acclaim both in America and abroad. Gifford's legacy endures as one of the foremost painters of the Hudson River School, celebrated for his evocative landscapes and contributions to American art.
