Clarence Coles Phillips (1880–1927) was an American artist and illustrator recognized for his distinct portrayal of stylish women in advertisements and magazine covers. Despite minimal formal training at the Chase School of Art, he established an advertising agency that employed notable individuals like his former classmate Edward Hopper. In 1907, he joined the Life magazine staff, becoming a prominent figure associated with the publication. His professional breakthrough came with creating the "fadeaway girl" design, seamlessly blending figures with the background, a technique he expanded in subsequent covers. His innovative use of negative space engaged viewers and reduced printing costs! He also contributed cover art to publications like Good Housekeeping and produced advertising images for various clients, including women's clothing manufacturers and automobile companies. His series for Holeproof Hosiery products garnered attention for the glamourousy racy women featured.
