Elegant Bubbles - Friendship Greeting Card

Say "bonjour" to a friend with chic bubbles! This gouache painting titled Les Bulles de Savon is one of the earliest examples of Erté’s Art Deco cover illustrations for Harper’s Bazar (renamed Harper's Bazaar in 1930), and it graced the magazine's cover in November 1918. In the original cover, two chic Parisian ladies, icons of the new modernist turn, are depicted blowing bubbles that showcase a parade of Edwardian and Art Nouveau fashions. At a time when magazines had no headlines, the cover illustration had to be attention-grabbing!

Erté (1892-1990), whose birth name was Romain de Tirtoff, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After collaborating with the renowned Paul "Le Magnifique" Poiret on various theatrical productions, Erté ventured into independent work. He crafted stunning costume and fashion designs for the most celebrated actresses of his time, like Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Norma Shearer, to name a few. His breathtaking stage designs graced iconic venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Paris Opera. His artistic design work in the fields of fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor rightfully earned him the title, "The Father of the Art Deco Movement."
