INSIDE GREETING: True friends have no solitary joy or sorrow.

These adorable companions, depicted in the 1880s, share a tender moment over a broken drum. We sourced this image from the pages of the exquisitely illustrated poetry collection Under the Mistletoe, authored by Robert Ellice Mack and beautifully illustrated by Lizzie Lawson, a talented husband and wife duo! See this image as an art print!

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lawson (1867–1905?), renowned for her enchanting children's illustrations, was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her artistic talent was inherited from her father, John Lawson, a successful illustrator, painter, and sculptor. By 1881, Elizabeth was already established as a working artist in Chelsea, collaborating with her father on beloved children's books and annuals. In 1886, she married Robert Ellice Mack, a writer and editor who also partnered with her and her father on various publications. Later in the 1800s, she relocated to Scotland after her husband was assigned a position in Edinburgh with the renowned publisher Nelson's. Lawson's portfolio boasts over forty books depicting children in diverse settings, each rendered with a delightful innocence and carefree spirit.
