INSIDE GREETING: A Great Big Kiss on Your Birthday!

The original 1939 Mabel Lucie Attwell postcard with this image proclaimed "Larf I must — If I Bust!" Alongside her signature happy children, Attwell often added a playful touch with misspelled titles and captions, creating an authentic childlike essence. This is one of our most popular birthday cards and images in general!

Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964) is celebrated for her endearing illustrations of cute and cuddly children, which found their home in children's stories, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes. Notably, The Boo Boos, chubby fairies introduced in 1921, became beloved characters. Attwell's commercial prowess flourished, with her delightful portrayals gracing children's books, postcards, ads, figurines, and even tea sets! Like many wildly successful commercial artists, she enjoyed immense popularity with general audiences, but her work often faced skepticism from art critics of her time. Nevertheless, Attwell's legacy is deeply ingrained in the hearts of those who continue to find joy in her endearing illustrations that radiate the essence of childhood.
