We think this peaceful scene is perfect for a contemplative greeting card. It's Birds Of The Bagaduce by Marsden Hartley, painted in oil in 1939, depicting a place in his beloved home state of Maine. See our entire Nature's Beauty Collection!

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an American Modernist painter, poet, and essayist. Born in Maine, he began his art education at the Cleveland School of Art before moving to New York City to study under William Merritt Chase. His first solo exhibition in 1909 marked the beginning of his mature works inspired by the landscapes of Western Maine. European travels in 1912 introduced him to avant-garde circles in Paris and Berlin, where he explored abstraction and German Expressionism. Returning to the U.S. with a distinct German sympathizer viewpoint, his later years were marked by extensive travels, including periods in Mexico and the Bavarian Alps, before settling back in Maine, embracing his identity as "the painter of Maine." Throughout his life, Hartley grappled with his homosexuality, subtly expressing it in his paintings, now recognized for their affirmation of his identity.
