Maria Louise Kirk (1860-1938), commonly known as M.L. Kirk, was a prolific and highly talented American illustrator, although details about her personal life remain elusive. She received her art education at the esteemed School of Design for Women and the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, then illustrated over fifty books throughout her career. Her most celebrated works are her renditions of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, and the first edition of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden.
