INSIDE GREETING: Life's song would lose its charm, were there no babies to begin it. — John G. Whittier

All aboard this adorable boat! This Mabel Lucie Atwell illustration showcases her signature depiction of cheerful and content children. Are you acquainted with John Greenleaf Whittier, the American Quaker poet of the caption? His poetry revolved around morality, nature, and human rights, reflecting his fervent abolitionist stance. He gained significant popularity in the second half of the 19th century, and his deep familial affection resonates throughout much of his work, which is why we've chosen to use his poem! Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964) is celebrated for her endearing illustrations of cute and cuddly children, which found their home in children's stories, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes. Notably, The Boo Boos, chubby fairies introduced in 1921, became beloved characters. Attwell's commercial prowess flourished, with her delightful portrayals gracing children's books, postcards, ads, figurines, and even tea sets! Like many wildly successful commercial artists, she enjoyed immense popularity with general audiences, but her work often faced skepticism from art critics of her time. Nevertheless, Attwell's legacy is deeply ingrained in the hearts of those who continue to find joy in her endearing illustrations that radiate the essence of childhood.
