Find inspiration for your daily jottings in the majesty of the Arctic! Created in collaboration with the New York Public Library (NYPL) for their 2024 exhibition "The Awe of the Arctic: A Visual History," this notebook features images of advertising cards from a collection of approximately 100,000 trading cards from various countries. Artist Albert Operti made two voyages to the Arctic with American explorer Robert E. Peary, and the Hassan Cork Tip Cigarettes commissioned these collectible polar exploration cards. The reverse side of the cards provided biographical information and observations, which we've included on the notebook's inside cover. Albert Operti (1852-1927) was an acclaimed artist known for his vivid depictions of the Arctic's natural wonders, exploration scenes, and ships. Born in Italy and educated in Britain, his artistic career significantly turned when he accompanied R.E. Peary on his 1896 and 1897 northern expeditions. These journeys resulted in hundreds of sketches and studies, which became the foundation of his later work. The Explorers' Club in New York commissioned many of his paintings. Beyond his paintings and sketches, he was also commissioned to create plaster casts of Greenlanders for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). With a background in theatrical scene painting, Operti spent much of his mid-life working with the Metropolitan Opera. In his final years, he returned to the AMNH, where he painted diorama backdrops, murals, and friezes for their exhibitions.
