INSIDE GREETING: Nothing happens unless it is first a dream. Congratulations on your new child.

This sweet motif of star fishing from the moon is a recurring theme in Mabel Lucie Attwell's work. With their hallmark large heads, expressive eyes, and petite mouths, various children engage in this whimsical activity, beautifully capturing the essence of Attwell's signature style. This particular girl made her debut in 1925's The Lucie Attwell's Children's Book. Within this book, one of many in her repertoire, Attwell presents a delightful array of illustrations portraying children immersed in ordinary pursuits yet expressing grand emotions.

Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964) is celebrated for her endearing illustrations of cute and cuddly children, which found their home in children's stories, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes. Notably, The Boo Boos, chubby fairies introduced in 1921, became beloved characters. Attwell's commercial prowess flourished, with her delightful portrayals gracing children's books, postcards, ads, figurines, and even tea sets! Like many wildly successful commercial artists, she enjoyed immense popularity with general audiences, but her work often faced skepticism from art critics of her time. Nevertheless, Attwell's legacy is deeply ingrained in the hearts of those who continue to find joy in her endearing illustrations that radiate the essence of childhood.
