Paul de Longpré (1855–1911) was a highly acclaimed French-born American botanical artist known for his exquisite watercolor paintings of flowers, particularly roses. Born in Lyon, France, he showed an early talent for art and began painting at a young age. His passion for botanical illustration led him to specialize exclusively in painting flowers, capturing their delicate beauty and intricate details with remarkable skill. In 1890, he relocated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where he famously traded three of his paintings for estate land in the emerging neighborhood of Hollywood. The beautiful house and flower-filled gardens he created there became a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors eager to admire the flowers that inspired his stunning art, which was widely reproduced in prints, calendars, greeting cards, and postage stamps. Today, De Longpré's legacy as a master botanical artist endures, with his artworks cherished by collectors and admirers of botanical illustration worldwide.
