It's from the pages of The Story of Peter Pan (1907), a retold version of the 1904 play by Daniel O'Connor and illustrated by Alice B. Woodward. Alice Bolingbroke Woodward (1862–1951) was a prolific English artist and illustrator renowned for her contributions to children's literature and scientific illustration. Born in London, she hailed from a family deeply rooted in both art and science. Her studies at prestigious art schools and the mentorship of prominent artists led to numerous commissions from well-known publishers like J. M. Dent and Macmillan and Company. Her illustrious career spanned many projects, from illustrating classic children's tales to providing meticulous scientific illustrations for publications such as From Nebula to Man (1905) and Evolution In the Past (1912). Notably, she signed all her illustrative work with a distinctive butterfly monogram, while her scientific illustrations bore her name. Woodward left behind a remarkable legacy in art and science.
