INSIDE GREETING: In this hour of sorrow may you be comforted by the heartfelt sympathy of your many friends and loved ones.

This beautiful landscape, featuring a lush garden with a background rainbow, is among our most popular sympathy images. The source painting, The Rainbow, was created by William Blair Bruce in 1888. See our entire Sympathy Card Collection.

William Blair Bruce (1859–1906) was one of Canada's pioneering impressionist painters. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, his artistic talent was recognized early, leading his family to send him to study art at the Académie Julian in Paris. Immersed in the vibrant art scene of Paris and influenced by the Impressionist movement, Bruce developed a distinctive style characterized by loose brushwork and a keen sense of color. Often painting en plein air alongside artist friends, he captured the essence of landscapes and figures with remarkable vitality. Despite facing financial challenges and personal tragedies, such as losing about 200 pieces of his work in a tragic steamship sinking, His legacy endures through his vibrant and evocative paintings. Alongside his wife and frequent model, the sculptor Carolina Benedicks, Bruce established an artists' estate called Brucebo in Gotland, Sweden. Today, Brucebo is both a nature reserve, a destination for artistic study, and an art museum, honoring the creative contributions of both the talented husband and wife.
