Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922) is a towering figure in Texan Impressionist art, earning the moniker "the father of Texas painting." Born in San Antonio to a family with a rich artistic heritage, his early passion for sketching and painting was under the tutelage of prominent Texan artist Verner Moore White. After graduating from the West Texas Military Academy, he ventured to New York to study with the renowned American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. After training, he returned to San Antonio in 1909, producing his most acclaimed works, notably capturing the beauty of bluebonnet landscapes. His art, celebrated for its vibrant depictions of Texas scenery, gained widespread recognition, with notable admirers including President George W. Bush, who adorned the Oval Office with three of Onderdonk's paintings.
