Josep Renau (1907–1982), born in Valencia, Spain, distinguished himself in graphic arts, harnessing its power for media and propaganda. As the general director of Fine Arts during the Spanish Civil War, Renau curated the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition, commissioning works from esteemed artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Championing the preservation of cultural heritage, he orchestrated transferring the Museo del Prado collection to Valencia, safeguarding it from wartime destruction. Renau's commitment to the Republican cause led to exile in Mexico and later East Germany, where he continued his activism through poster art and design. His influence extended beyond artistry; he played a pivotal role in forming the Communist Party in Valencia and advocated for using photography and typography as tools of political resistance. Renau's legacy endures as a beacon of politically engaged art, encapsulating the struggle against fascism and imperialism in the 20th century.
