Millicent Sowerby (1878–1967) was an esteemed English illustrator and children's book author, born into an artistic lineage deeply rooted in creativity and craftsmanship. Her father, John G. Sowerby, was a versatile artist renowned for his work in the Aesthetic Movement. And her great-grandfather, James Sowerby, was a naturalist celebrated for his meticulously detailed scientific drawings. Interestingly, the family's entrepreneurial endeavors included Ellison Glass Works, a pioneering enterprise in the production of pressed glass—during the 1880s, they were the largest producer of its kind worldwide! Millicent's artistic talents were primarily nurtured within her artistic family, supplemented by some classes. An early career triumph came with her popular postcard series, Postcards for the Little Ones. Her illustrious career is marked by iconic illustrations of classic children's stories, collaborations on books with her author sister, Githa Sowerby, and notably, she was one of the earliest women to illustrate Lewis Carroll's timeless masterpiece, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
