Władysław Teodor "W.T." Benda (1873–1948) was a Polish-American artist celebrated for his illustration, portraiture, and mask-making. After studying art in Poland and Austria, he settled in New York City in 1899, where he became a prominent illustrator for magazines like Collier's, McCall's, and Ladies' Home Journal. He was renowned for his captivating portrayals of women and crafted lifelike and fantastical masks for stage productions and films. He even wrote the Encyclopædia Britannica entry on masks alongside his book, Masks, a study of his designs and construction techniques! He was deeply involved with the Polish-American community and received honors from the Polish government for his contributions during World War I. Benda's legacy lives on in prestigious museum collections, showcasing his lasting impact on art and culture.
