BLANK INSIDE

This enchanting scene by Florence Choate was originally featured in a 1916 book titled Daddy's Bedtime Fairy Stories by Mary Graham Bonner. The book was part of a series of fine leather-bound bedtime books, accompanied by illustrations from Choate and her enduring creative partner, Elizabeth A. Curtis. Known for their expertise in depicting sweet children, fairies, and moments of wonder in fairy tales, all three elements are magically illustrated in this one image!

Florence Choate (1878-1967), born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was active during the Golden Age of Illustration. She honed her skills at the Art Students League in New York, where she received scholarships in portrait and figure drawing. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Elizabeth A. Curtis, a fellow student who would become her lifelong collaborator. Together, they crafted over 20 children's books. While little else is known about Choate, her artistic legacy lives on—the collection at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum includes nearly 500 drawings from her estate!
