Harold Knight (1874–1961) was a distinguished English painter specializing in portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes. Born in Nottingham, England, he showed early promise as an artist, winning several prizes for his oil studies of nudes at the renowned Nottingham School of Art. In 1903, he married fellow artist Laura Johnson, who became famous as Laura Knight. The couple moved to Newlyn, Cornwall, in 1907, joining the vibrant artistic community known as the Newlyn School. Despite facing criticism for his principled stance as a conscientious objector during World War I, which led to him having to work demanding farm labor, he remained steadfast in his convictions. His work was also featured in the painting event at the 1928 Summer Olympics. he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1937.
