Description

We adore these symmetrical beauties by Erté! They made their debut on the July 1922 cover of Harper's Bazar (with the additional "a" added to "Bazaar" in 1930), complemented by a captivating headline that teased readers with the allure of "Hot Weather Fashions" within its pages. Those very fashions were probably as refreshing as the peacock frolicking in the fountain!

Erté (1892-1990), whose birth name was Romain de Tirtoff, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After collaborating with the renowned Paul "Le Magnifique" Poiret on various theatrical productions, Erté ventured into independent work. He crafted stunning costume and fashion designs for the most celebrated actresses of his time, like Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Norma Shearer, to name a few. His breathtaking stage designs graced iconic venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Paris Opera. His artistic design work in the fields of fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor rightfully earned him the title, "The Father of the Art Deco Movement."
