Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) was a prominent American artist known for his iconic depictions of the American West. Born in Fresno, California, his fascination with the Western landscape and its inhabitants began early in his life. He embarked on a prolific career that spanned several decades, during which he traveled extensively throughout the American Southwest, capturing the rugged beauty of the desert, mountains, and plains. Dixon's artwork often portrayed the daily lives of Native Americans, cowboys, and settlers. He experimented with various artistic styles, ranging from Impressionism to Modernism, but his unique blend of realism and romanticism became his trademark.
