Frank Cheyne Papé (1878–1972) was an English artist and illustrator whose illustrious career spanned 64 years! Renowned for his mastery of gouache, watercolor, and pen and ink, his work graced the pages of numerous books and magazines and was celebrated for his diverse illustrations, ranging from classical works by Homer and Rabelais to modern novels by James Branch Cabell and Anatole France. His collaborations with Cabell, in particular, garnered widespread acclaim, with his lush illustrations adorning the pages of esteemed literary works like Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice (1919). Praised for his attention to detail and subtle humor, his illustrations became integral to the reading experience, elevating the narratives they accompanied. Despite facing challenges during World War I and economic downturns in the 1930s, Papé's passion for illustration endured, and his legacy lives on through his timeless illustrations, which collectors and readers cherish.
