BLANK INSIDE

This is a fine Christmas tree indeed! The captivating view from outside the window into the beautifully adorned home graced the cover of House & Garden's December 1917 edition, a creation by the talented artist Ethel Franklin Betts Baines. We adore the charming juxtaposition of the grand tree inside, its view framed by the snowy trees outside. See our entire Christmas Tree Collection!

Ethel Franklin Betts Baines (1877-1959) was a prominent American illustrator during The Golden Age of Illustration. Her older sister, Anna Whelan Betts, also became a notable illustrator. Following in the footsteps of many artists of her era, Ethel received her artistic education under the guidance of the great Howard Pyle. Just like her esteemed contemporaries, such as Jessie Willcox Smith and Sarah Stilwell Weber, she created magazine covers for the prominent publications of her time. She went on to illustrate many children's books, one of the most notable being her work on Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic tale, A Little Princess. Notably, Ethel received a bronze medal for her exceptional illustration of The Six Swans at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition!
