Edward Penfield (1866–1925) trained at the Art Students League in New York before becoming Harper's magazine's art director. His acclaimed monthly posters for Harper's established him as a leading graphic designer by 1900. These posters, considered definitive graphic works of the 1890s, skillfully utilized improved color printing technology. Penfield's style drew from Japanese prints and French artists like Toulouse-Lautrec and Chéret. After leaving Harper's in 1901, he designed for Scribner's and Collier's magazines, illustrated books, and created commercial designs. Along with Will Bradley, Penfield significantly shaped American graphic design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
