INSIDE GREETING: We read books to find out who we are.

These rosy-cheeked kids enjoying a book in a hammock with their pets pair perfectly with the quote by Ursula K. Le Guin! Rosa C. Petherick's image was first published in Travels in Toyland in 1913. It's timeless and sweet, capturing the innocence and joy of childhood reading. See our entire Books & Readers Collection!

Rosa Clementina Petherick (1871–1931) was a British book illustrator born in Addiscombe, Croydon. As the eldest of five daughters of the artist Horace William Petherick, she hailed from a musically and artistically inclined family, with her sisters forming the Petherick Quartet. While not part of the quartet, she was also musically gifted, briefly playing violin in the Streatham Symphony Orchestra. Known for participating in design competitions, she garnered honorable mentions for her work in The Studio and The International Studio (illustrated fine arts and decorative arts magazines). Her artistic contributions extended to illustrations for numerous children's books, annuals, and periodicals, particularly those by Blackie and Son Limited. Characterized by uniformly heavy outlines, her etchings were noted for depictions of children at play.
