Duane Bryers (1911–2012) was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor renowned for creating the iconic character Hilda, a pin-up symbol of body positivity. Besides Hilda, he is known for depicting the American frontier and Western Art. His professional career began in 1937 when he won a cash prize for a mural depicting mining history in Minnesota, which enabled him to move to New York City. During World War II, while attending flight mechanics school in the US Army Air Force, he ventured into the pin-up genre, painting girlie art on the noses of planes to earn extra income. It was during this time that Hilda made her debut! She became a staple of Brown & Bigelow calendars from the mid-1950s to the 1980s, often depicted in humorous and whimsical situations. She captured the hearts of many with her confident and carefree demeanor. Bryers continued to paint, sculpt, and illustrate throughout his life, leaving behind a legacy of joy, humor, and body positivity.
