Description

"On the fourth day comes the astrologer from his crumbling old tower..." reads the accompanying text to this fantastic image by N.C. Wyeth. It's from the pages of a 1916 posthumous publication of Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger, a fantastical novel that marked his last major work of fiction. Wyeth's illustrations in literature have established many visual tropes for stories and characters, and this portrayal of a classic wizard/Merlin type is no exception. It's undeniably magical, don't you agree? See this image on a greeting card!

N.C. Wyeth (1882–1945), born Newell Convers Wyeth in Needham, Massachusetts, was a celebrated American artist and illustrator whose legacy continues to shape the art world. A student of Howard Pyle, he honed his skills under the guidance of one of the era's most prominent illustrators. He created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books in his prolific career! His first commission as an illustrator came in 1903 when he depicted a bucking bronco for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Seeking to deepen his understanding of Western themes, he ventured West, immersing himself in cowboy life, moving cattle, delivering mail, and performing ranch chores. Transitioning to illustrating classic literature, he became renowned for his dynamic interpretations of beloved stories, including Treasure Island (1911), The Last of the Mohicans (1919), and Robinson Crusoe (1920), among others. His illustrations, marked by action, exploration, and heroism, captured the adventurous spirit of these tales. Beyond illustration, he was a prolific fine artist, producing landscapes, portraits, and murals that showcased his mastery of form and color. Wyeth's impact on American illustration is immeasurable, influencing generations of artists with his bold compositions and vivid storytelling. His family continued the Wyeth legacy: his son, Andrew Wyeth, and his grandson, Jamie Wyeth, are also celebrated American painters!
