Illustrated by Bess Cleaveland for Cradle Roll Picture Papers, these were collections of great illustrations, puzzles, and Bible stories created by the Presbyterian Church in the 1920s and 30s for Sunday School lessons. Bess Bruce Cleaveland (1876-1966), an Ohio native, studied at the Art Students League and Pratt Institute in New York, earning her degree in 1901. Following six years of teaching art, she transitioned to illustrating books, teacher's magazines, and various commercial art projects. Her preferred mediums were ink and watercolor, through which she brought to life her favorite subjects: children and animals. She meticulously observed and sketched animals, visited zoos, and even drew wildlife in her backyard garden. Her talent shone in her illustrations for Maude Grant's children's book Windmills and Wooden Shoes (1920), showcasing her skillful portrayal of whimsical scenes and endearing characters.
