Charles Webster Hawthorne (1872–1930) was a prominent American portrait and genre painter and a respected educator. At 18, he relocated to New York City, where he worked during the day and pursued artistic studies at night. After studying abroad in the Netherlands and Italy, he returned to the United States, where he dedicated himself to teaching and painting. In addition to establishing the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899, he co-founded the Provincetown Art Association. He also became a full French Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts member in Paris. Throughout his career, his dedication to art education and his innovative approach to figure painting attracted talented students, including Norman Rockwell. Today, his legacy endures through his remarkable body of work and the lasting impact of his teachings.
