How fantastic is this striking piece by the brilliant artist Erté? He called it Optimism and Pessimism and it was on the cover of the May 1929 edition of Harper's Bazar (with an additional "a" added to "Bazaar" in 1930). His extraordinary journey with the magazine began in January 1915 and over the next two decades, every month, the magazine delighted readers with his stunning colored illustrations— an incredible 240 covers in total! This collaboration propelled him to fame and admiration in America, with his artistic influence crossing the Atlantic. Media mogul William Randolph Hearst summed up their creative partnership by asking, "What would Harper's Bazaar have been if it wasn't for Erté?" See our entire Roses Collection!
Erté (1892-1990), whose birth name was Romain de Tirtoff, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After collaborating with the renowned Paul "Le Magnifique" Poiret on various theatrical productions, Erté ventured into independent work. He crafted stunning costume and fashion designs for the most celebrated actresses of his time, like Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Norma Shearer, to name a few. His breathtaking stage designs graced iconic venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Paris Opera. His artistic design work in the fields of fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor rightfully earned him the title, "The Father of the Art Deco Movement."
