Description

A genuinely enchanting moment captured from the May 1918 edition of America's inaugural fashion magazine, Harper's Bazar (the additional "a" was introduced to "Bazaar" in 1930). In an era defined by magazine cover art, the focus was purely on dynamic illustration, devoid of any accompanying headlines. Consequently, the image had to exude exceptional dynamism to pique the reader's curiosity. Erté clearly triumphed in this endeavor! See this image on a greeting card!

Erté (1892-1990), whose birth name was Romain de Tirtoff, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After collaborating with the renowned Paul "Le Magnifique" Poiret on various theatrical productions, Erté ventured into independent work. He crafted stunning costume and fashion designs for the most celebrated actresses of his time, like Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Norma Shearer, to name a few. His breathtaking stage designs graced iconic venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Paris Opera. His artistic design work in the fields of fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor rightfully earned him the title, "The Father of the Art Deco Movement."
